Felt is one of the oldest textile forms which goes back to 600 BC. It finds its origin in the steppes of Central Asia, where nomadic herding people made yurts, shoes, hats and blankets from felt. Felt is a matted fabric of wool fibres as a result of heat, moisture (soap water), pressure and rubbing. Throughout this process the wool fibres shrink and come together to form a dense mat. You can create lots of different shapes, it can be flat or sculpted into a shape, you can also add small amounts of other fibres and be surprised about the result.

Felt Making

Another technique of making felt is building up a form from dry wool using the felt needle to tighten the fibres. This technique allows you to work out small details and is often used for doll making, reliefs and pictures. I mainly use the ancient technique with colourful dyed sheep wool. Everything shown on my website is handmade and therefore unique.
